Shelties and other family pets

I hoped I would never have to add this page to my website, but I guess it is time. No loss is ever easy......

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.  When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill or old, are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except one small thing, they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent, His eager body quivers, Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head; and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.

1972-1986 one of the first dogs I remember as a child growing up was our beloved Australian Shepherd, Brandy. She was hit by a mail truck in our driveway. She was already going blind and deaf due to old age.

1985-1992 I have never loved a dog as much as I loved my "Peeper", she was a mutt, but the smartest dog I have ever owned. Peeper followed me to the main road as I was leaving and was struck by a car.

I went a long time without a dog because losing Peeper hurt so bad, I didn't want to go through that again.

Since raising shelties our first lost came with a 6 week old puppy in Sadie's 1st litter.  He died instantly of an allergic reaction to flea spray.

My vet told me we would have loses, but I never wanted to lose any puppies. I would do anything I could to prevent this from happening, but sometimes there just isn't anything you can do.

In 2003 Abby had a Csection after 11 hours of labor.  She had 8 beautiful puppies, 5 tri boys, 1 blue merle girl and 2 blue merle boys.  One of the blue boys was born dead.  The other 7 were alive.  But this was a terrible experience for me being inexperienced with csection puppies.  Within the next 24 hours we lost another blue boy and three of the tris.  When Abby awoke from the anesthesia she "accidentally" ate one of them.  I hope we never have to experience anything like this ever again.

December 2003 Sadie gave birth to one tiny little sable girl weighing only 2.6 ozs.  I guess Sadie knew something just wasn't right. This sweet little puppy died within 30 hours.

March 2004 Jasmine gives birth to a litter of three beautiful babies. 48 hours later I weigh them to learn one has lost weight and he dies the next day.  He was also a very small puppy.

During 2003 I had switched dog foods and was using a brand called PMI Nutrition.  After talking to other breeders who had used this dog food and had similar complaints,  I have come to the conclusion that this is a bad dog food was the cause of things that happened during this 8+ months of use.  Sadie also had a false pregnancy during the summer of 2003.

August 19, 2004 - Hannah's 3 year old teddy bear hamster named Peek A Boo died of old age.  We will all miss him.  He was the sweetest, most gentle hamster I have ever seen.

October 2004 - just 15 days after showing off Hannah's adorable Lionhead Lop Rabbit, Simba, at a local pet show, he was found dead with no previous sign of illness.  He won three ribbons at the pet show.

December 12, 2004 - Ami gave birth to puppies this morning. One tiny puppy weighed only 2 oz and only lived a couple of hours.

December 13, 2004 - Ami's next small puppy weighed only 4 oz and he just wasn't strong enough.

February 3, 2005 - Patches had a difficult time having her 2nd puppy, despite my efforts to rush her to the vet, the puppy was very large and born dead he weighed 10.2 oz and looked identical to his father.

May 2005 - We lost Sadie to a heat stroke.

July 24, 2005 - Ami's first puppy born today was 4 oz and born dead.  Her second puppy was 2.8oz and I managed to keep him alive until July 28th.
